Summer Update
Thanks to everyone who supported our 2013 DMGA Spring Plant Sale on April 27. It was fun seeing so many familiar faces at our new location on Oak Grove Rd. -- and fun meeting new gardeners in the immediate area. We hope that all the plants you took home are growing happily and that we'll see you again next year. It was a few days too late for the plant sale, but our Plant-a-Row Garden group got busy renovating the long rectangular iris bed so that it could be turned into another vegetable bed this year. Here's a view of all the iris pots that were donated to ECOPAAT. |

DeKalb Master Gardener Association Awards 2012/2013 ScholarshipsThe DeKalb Master Gardener Association (DMGA) was pleased to present scholarships totaling one thousand dollars to two students at its October 2012 meeting. The horticulture students Tammie Coggin and Malcolm Moses both live in DeKalb County and attend Gwinnett Technical College.
Tammie Coggin was overjoyed to receive a five hundred dollar scholarship. She has been gardening for 12 years, but now feels like she is just getting started. Losing her career position was the impetus to get Tammie studying horticulture. This is what she wants to do when she grows up! Tammie’s interests are Environmental Horticulture and also Urban Agriculture. So, what a surprise to learn her favorite flower, shrub and tree are edible: sunflower, blueberry and walnut. Greenhouse Management has been her favorite class so far. Tammie will graduate in December 2013 and plans to restart her grandfather’s defunct farm, adding a garden center or greenhouse. Malcolm Moses was also very happy to receive the other five hundred dollar scholarship. Malcolm has only been gardening for a year, but knows he has found his career. His interest in horticulture was sparked when he started reading the American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Garden Plants at the college library. Once he started, he was hooked. Now, to relieve stress, he’ll read more of the book or visit a garden center. His favorite flowers are ornamental kales and celosia. Threadleaf false cypress ‘Gold Mop’ is his favorite shrub, and Crepe myrtle is his favorite tree. Malcolm named 3 classes as his favorites: Nursery Production, Landscape Installation and Landscape Design. Future plans are not completely decided. He aims to start his own landscape company or work in a greenhouse. He will graduate in the Spring of 2013. DMGA members take great pleasure in seeing the fruits of their labors going to such worthy causes. They are very proud to be assisting in the education of the next generation of horticulture professionals. |

2012 Spring Garden TourThank you to all who patronized the DeKalb Master Gardener Association's Spring Garden Tour in April. Three private gardens of DMGA members, located in Dunwoody, Chamblee, and Druid Hills communities, were open to the public. They demonstrated the diverse gardening styles and opportunities in DeKalb County. Some of the plants grown in each host garden were offered for sale, giving visitors an opportunity to see each type of plant in a typical garden setting. Proceeds from the tour will go toward the horticultural scholarships that are awarded annually by DMGA to University of Georgia and Gwinnett Technical College students. Thank you also to the DMGA members who helped to plan, organize, and host this first DMGA garden tour. And special thanks to the DMGA members who allowed us all to enjoy their gardens. |
