ABOUT DMGA

The DeKalb Master Gardener Association is just that — an  association of about 40 Master Gardeners and friends in DeKalb County, Georgia.  The organization was formed to foster more extensive educational, community service, and social events for interested Master Gardeners. 

DMGA is classified as a "Master Gardener volunteer organization outside the UGA university structure" and receives no support or public funds through the Cooperative Extension Service.  For information about the DeKalb County Cooperative Extension Service, please visit the following website:  www.ugaextension.com/dekalb/

HOW TO BECOME A MASTER GARDENER IN DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA:


  • Call the DeKalb Extension Service at 404-298-4080 for information and an application.
  • Master Gardener applications are available in September; the deadline for applications is usually mid-October.
  • Certification training is offered through the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.  It is a three month course that is given once a year usually from January through March.   Classes are taught by extension agents, horticulture professors and other gardening experts.
  • First-year Master Gardeners (interns) must complete 50 hours of volunteer service:  25 hours in community and service projects, and 25 hours working in the cooperative extension office, fielding gardening questions from the public.  In subsequent years, Master Gardeners must complete 25 volunteer hours annually to remain active.

To become a Master Gardener elsewhere in Georgia,
contact the cooperative extension office in your county.
